Follow on Google News | ‘Scary Monsters’ in CornwallThree self-portraits from cultural chameleon David Bowie went under the hammer in Penzance this week. David Lay sold the paintings for a total of £6500 to a bidder from London.
For over 50 golden years Bowie has enjoyed a variety of mediums of artistic expression such as music, art, fashion and film. While a teenager he attended art school and indeed his only O level is in art. Today Bowie has created over 5000 paintings. Auctioneer David Lay was pleased to secure sales at a higher value than anticipated. “It is always interesting to see the reaction to art that has a celebrity connection. David Bowie’s reputation as a cultural icon meant that we were expecting a good response. These three self-portraits came from the estate of well-known St Ives art dealer ‘Gillie’ Gilbert who I think would have enjoyed the attention that his collection created.” Bidding for the self-portraits took place in the Penzance Auction House, online and via telephone until finally a London bidder won.
