CAT 2012: Tough VA section gives headache on Day 7

The verbal ability section was unpredictable. It was lengthy and difficult, especially the three reading comprehension passages took a long time to read

Oct. 20, 2012 - PRLog -- The seventh day of CAT 2012, conducted on October 19, witnessed a moderate turnout. According to Vinayak Kudva, product head, IMS Learning, the paper has been following a set pattern over the past few days. “There were no big surprises in the exam pattern. The Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation section was of easy to moderate difficulty level. The Verbal Ability section was unpredictable. It was lengthy and difficult, especially the three reading comprehension passages took a long time to read. Candidates’ time management skill was put to test,” Mr. Kudva said.
Byju Raveendran, CAT expert and founder of Byju’s CAT Classes, said, “The difficulty level of the CAT exam has been increasing compared with the initial years of the computer-based MBA entrance test. The trend this year is that questions from one of the sections are tough. However, there have been tougher papers earlier when the exam used to be conducted in the paper-pencil-based format.”
Not only experts, but test takers as well are of the same opinion.

Ekanki Jain, a test taker from Noida, said, “The Quant section was not so tough. But, the verbal section was very lengthy and difficult. I attempted 20 questions in both the sections.”

Another aspirant, Aditya Bhusan, said: “The Quant section was easy. In the verbal section, passages were time taking and difficult. I attempted two out of three passages. Questions were indirect in nature. I attempted 20 questions in both the section with an accuracy level of 80 per cent.”

Let us have a look at the section-wise analysis of the Day 7.

Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation

Algebra and functions formed a major part of the Quant section. The other topics were trigonometry, mensuration, number system, P&C and geometry. Questions on data interpretation were moderate to easy in nature. Overall, the paper was good and balanced.

Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning

This section was difficult and lengthy. In verbal ability, there were para jumbles, sentence completion, sentence correction, fill in the blanks and vocabulary. The highlight of the section was passages. There were three passages, of which two were lengthy and took a long time to read. Questions asked from the passages were also indirect. Questions like what was the tone of the author, theme of the paragraph, etc were common features like the past six days.

Logical reasoning questions were difficult and calculation intensive.
