BIRMINGHAM, AL (October 17, 2012) - Seventy percent of women eligible for breast reconstruction are not being informed of their options. According to clinical research, breast reconstruction immediately following mastectomy is connected to higher survival rates, which has been attributed to patients’ improved self-esteem and well-being.

Birmingham-based Synovis Micro Companies Alliance is committed to providing women and their loved ones with essential information that will help in their recovery and rehabilitation. To support this goal, Synovis MCA has published a special excerpt from the book, “A Woman’s Decision”, focusing on some of today’s newest reconstruction procedures, which use natural tissue to restore a woman’s breast after cancer therapy. The intention is to ensure that women have the appropriate tools to make decisions about their reconstruction options.

Synovis MCA supports microsurgeons, patients, and loved ones each day, but especially today by participating in BRA day events across the country. Team members are wearing pink and distributing “A Woman’s Decision” excerpts to doctors and patients in conjunction with planned BRA Day events.

About BRA Day: Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day is an initiative designed to promote education, awareness, and access regarding post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. BRA Day USA’s goal is to ensure that all breast cancer patients are fully informed of their surgical options and supported by a team of medical professionals working together for the patient’s best interest. Most breast cancer survivors who have had a complete or partial mastectomy are candidates for breast reconstruction. BRA Day was first launched in 2011 in Canada and now will occur annually on the third Wednesday of October.
