Oct. 11, 2012 - PRLog -- - George Tice and Ray Johnston, two local veterans who suffer from PTSD, are in need of the community’s support to accomplish their goal – to ride across the state to raise awareness for the thousands of veterans across the country that suffers from PTSD. Tice and Johnston have almost everything to make their journey on October 27th a success, but do have some urgent needs and requests. George and Ray have garnered the support of community leaders, and have raised more than $1,500 for the ride thus far. However, they need to raise another $3,000 to pay for expenses such as bike maintenance and repairs, food, hotel stays and other essentials. Most importantly, they are looking for a volunteer with a SUV or van who can accompany them on the ride and transport necessary supplies such as clothing, water, bike parts, and food essential for a safe journey. Tice and Johnston are also hoping other veterans will join them on their ride across the state which is expected to take ten days with stops along the way to visit city and state officials. Their mission is to raise awareness and funds for veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and suicide among our military.
Tice and Johnston hope to encourage more aid for soldiers who suffer from PTSD. Presently, there are minimal resources and volunteers available to help those suffering from this widespread illness. They plan to meet with active duty family members, veterans and the public along the way to Tallahassee. “Currently, 1 out of 8 soldiers who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan show signs of having PTSD, and every 24 hours or less a military person will take his or her own life. It is vital for veterans in crisis who call the suicide crisis line to get the help they need and not be left on hold,” says Tice.
Tice and Johnston would like to see some changes when military veterans call the crisis line. They would like to see boots on the ground and a response team that will meet with the distressed veteran face to face within a 3-hour time frame. “It’s a lot easier for a veteran to talk about their problems with someone face to face,” says Tice.
Tice and Johnston have received the backing of many influential leaders including Congressional Candidate Trey Radel, Representative Matt Caldwell, and Commissioner John Manning. A cameraman from Pineapple Productions has committed to riding along, and videotaping the entire 480-mile ride to our state capital.
Tice and Johnston are hosting a raffle to raise funds for Vets Ride 4 PTSD.  Every twenty dollar donation buys three chances to win a $1,000 Gift Certificate to the Diamond District, or one of two one-night stays at the Sandpiper Gulf Resort in Fort Myers Beach valued at over $500. The Veterans have been invited to attend three upcoming Everblades Hockey Games to raise funds and awareness for Vets Ride 4 PTSD. The games are Friday, October 12th, Saturday, October 13th, and Saturday, October 19th. Tickets are $15 through the Vets and include a $5 donation to the ride.
