Aug. 19, 2012 - PRLog -- It is recommended to start basic training as soon as the puppy comes into your home. If professional training is desired, some trainers will visit the dog's home to begin early training as early as 8 weeks. At such a young age, most training is focused around basic behaviors such as house training, sitting, and lying down.

The puppy is too young to learn too many commands at once, and the owner or trainer must be very patient in order to get the best results.

A puppy requires discipline, consistency, and the patience of its owner. The puppy training phase is integral in raising a healthy and happy dog and keeping a safe and fun home environment. Consistency is critical, especially when a dog is just learning to associate a new command with a certain behavior.

Dogs are expressive and may communicate needs by biting, whining, and getting fidgety. Changing one's own conduct may be effective in changing a puppy's behavior. For example, to discourage nipping, one can try ignoring the puppy when play gets too rough. Walking away will show the puppy that in order for play to be fun, they must be gentle.

House training is an important issue for puppies. Various methods of house training will work although the key is to be consistent. With regularly enforced rules, litter box, crate, or paper training, it can be accomplished quickly and with minimal mess. Many trainers recommend taking the puppy outside to a designated area as frequently as every half hour during the first few days to minimize accidents in the house and to teach the puppy that outside is the right place to go.

This type of training is more complex and usually suitable for dogs who have completed level one (basic training) or an equivalent level of adult dog training classes. Advanced training classes usually work with older dogs who have already built a connection with their primary trainer. In these classes, dogs learn to behave consistently well in distracting areas, and to hold positions for longer periods of times. There are also several different types of classes for advanced dogs.

Agility Training: In dog agility training, dogs learn to race through obstacle courses, which is a very fun activity for dogs, owners and anyone watching the event. Obstacle courses usually consist of curved or straight tunnels that the dog must run through, a seesaw that a dog will walk across, a "pause" table in which a dog jumps on a platform and lies down for about 5 seconds, and a set of poles that the dog must weave through.

CGC Preparation: Many dogs that exemplify outstanding behavior can go through an examination to obtain their Canine Good Citizen award. Many dogs that obtain their CGC certificate can then go on to become therapy dogs by visiting hospitals, libraries, or jails. In order to be CGC certified, dogs must be able to walk on a loose leash, allow a friendly stranger to approach the dog and owner in an every day situation, sit politely for petting, allow examination and grooming, walk through a crowd politely, and sit, down, and stay on command. In addition, dogs must be able to come when called, behave politely around other dogs, be confident in distracting situations, and handle supervised separation from their owner.
