Aug. 2, 2012 - PRLog -- About the Book:

Liverpool Catholic parish priest, Michael Jones receives an anonymous letter, denouncing an unnamed priest for abuse and betrayal of the secrets of the confessional. Who is the evil-doer? His fellow parish priest, the irreverent Father O'Malley? Or one of his predecessors, Father Ambrose, whose body is wasted by illness but whose eyes glow with the intensity of his faith, or Father Coffey, the quiet scholar buried in the his studies of Church history? As he struggles to solve a mystery protected by the obsessively secretive Church hierarchy, Michael ventures into an inner world he never knew existed; he finds victims of dispossession, cruelty, and repression. To his horror he realises the answer may lie in a terrible secret at the heart of his own family history. 'Out of the Depths' is a study of the evil which can be hidden behind an aura of holiness, a baffling crime puzzle in which the priest detectives struggle against seemingly impossible odds, and a heart-breaking story of thwarted love.

About the Author:

Keith Jacobsen was born in Liverpool and read modern languages at Oxford University.  He spent some years in the administrative Civil Service, since when he has devoted his time to musical interests and to writing.  You will find more details on his website, www.keithjacobsen.co.uk.  “Out of the Depths” is Keith’s second novel, and his “Furies Trilogy” of novels will be published by Thames River Press over the next three years.  He is currently working on a sequel to “Out of the Depths” featuring the same priest detectives.

Excerpt from the book:

‘Now if you ask me, it was the husband.  A crime de passion.’  His strong Dublin accent faltered not one iota during his brief and rare excursion into the French language.  ‘And it won’t be long before they find the body of the lover somewhere, this Mr Forsythe, despatched by the same hand.  Maybe the husband’ll do himself in afterwards, overwhelmed by grief and remorse.  A triangle of love becomes a triangle of death.’

He rubbed his hands and went over to the sideboard to pour himself another whiskey in celebration of the speed and precision with which he had solved the case, and in anticipation of more deaths to come.  ‘But they surely won’t find his body to have been despatched in the same way or in the same place?’ He frowned as he sat down, slightly deflated.

‘I have to admit that that is a curious feature of the case.  Naked among the dunes.  Maybe there’s a symbolic significance to it.  Perhaps that was where they first made love.  That was probably it.  He led her there for the final consummation.  Lust at the first and death at the last.  Almost poetic, wouldn’t you say?  But then his body would have been found there as well, if it was a suicide pact.  No, the love triangle is more convincing.  I showed that article to the Holy Ghost yesterday but he showed no reaction at all.  Too wrapped up in his mediaeval theology.’
