Meanwhile in the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, prime minister and leader of the VVD (Liberal) party, together with Maxime Verhagen, leader of Christian Democrats party, are trying to reach agreement on additional budget cuts of 14 billion euros to ensure that the Netherlands comply to meet EMU standards. Finally, to the relief of the financial markets, they agreed on major budget cuts to realize the maximum budget deficit of 3 percent.

What is perhaps shocking to expats who think the extent of this political uproar towards housing market is immense, it still remain a good news. Despite the government budget cutting uproar, expats community still have a good feeling about local housing market. Here are several recent facts for expats looking for an apartment and/or housing:

- 2.7 percent increase in sales volume residential properties than the same month last year.

- Dutch land registry indicates biggest improvements in Amsterdam region (+29 percent) and Rotterdam (+27 percent).

- Property transfer tax was lowered to 2 percent as temporary measure in June last year and the expectation was that this tax advantage would lapse in July of this year.

- Dutch Association of real estate agents (NVM) said it is too soon to celebrate: “There is no trend. The spring is always better than the winter months.”

Johan Grijzenhout, Real Estate broker,Perfect Housing Amsterdam said “If you are looking for an apartment or housing this summer in the Netherlands, keep in mind that the transfer tax is still 2 percent and there are broad range of fine quality properties available that can be a very good solution if you know what you are doing.”

Amid recent change in transfer tax, owners are attributed to a drastic turn in selling/renting out their properties. Properties are selling off the shelf, speeding up transactions in order to take advantage of reduced property transfer tax.
