This event reaches out to aspiring Black lawyers to provide them with game-changing "insider" information, resources and contacts.
By: National Black Pre-Law Conference This year's schedule is jam-packed with everything any aspiring lawyer would need to know to make an educated decision regarding pursuing a professional legal education and career. There will be powerful and thought-provoking workshop sessions and panel discussions made up of expert law school administrators and accomplished and knowledgeable law students, law graduates, lawyers and judges from across the nation. Key "insider" information will be shared about the admissions process, the Law School Admission Test, personal and diversity statements, financing a legal education, selecting a law school, preparing for and making the most of the law school experience, diversity issues, passing the bar exam, managing student loan debt, different legal career options and paths, finding success in the legal job search, networking and relationship building, etiquette, marketing oneself and business image, service and leadership, strategic planning, and the keys to career advancement. The conference even delves into the controversial issues others want to shy away from including whether law school is worth the investment with the looming debt load and fewer jobs in this unstable economy, the special concerns African Americans face in legal education and in the profession, as well as the legal education reform movement. There are several keynote speakers who will be featured who will share words of encouragement and their own personal journeys to lawyerhood. They will include Angela Rye, Executive Director and General Counsel of The Congressional Black Caucus and Director of Strategic Partnerships for IMPACT, Cassandra Sneed Ogden, Executive Director of The Council on Legal Education Opportunity (CLEO), Brian Tippens, Director of Hewlett-Packard‘ Moreover, participants will have the unique opportunity to actually experience what it feels like to be a law student in the law school classroom through mock classes. In addition, they will be able to gain small group interaction and networking opportunities through structured networking activities including icebreakers and speed networking. Two signature events will also take place including The Law School Admissions & Preparation Help Advice Clinic and the Personal Statement, Diversity Statement, Resume and Addenda Practical Assistance Session. During these events, attendees can speak with a law student or attorney mentor to get answers to their specific questions, and limited one-on-one assistance with concerns about their admissions materials. Furthermore, the popular Law School Recruitment Fair will take place during a dedicated time block where pre-law students will have the opportunity to talk to law school representatives from approximately 100 law schools at all tier levels from across the country. Attendees will also have the opportunity to visit with companies and organizations that target the prospective and current law student. New this year, we will be hosting special town hall meetings and forums featuring models of law school admission success, as well as discussions on diversity issues in American law firms, and the LSAT achievement gap. The conference will end with a special Awards Banquet and Aspiring Lawyers Pinning Ceremony. At the closing event, all Black attorneys in attendance will be applauded and asked to plant a seed of confidence in the aspiring lawyers by committing to mentor at least one in attendance. No other comprehensive national pre-law conference like this exists - period. With only 7% of law students and 5% of all lawyers being African American, the need for greater representation remains high.
