Kentucky Defective Drug Lawyers Discuss Pradaxa Lawsuit Consolidation

July 5, 2012 - PRLog -- LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY (JUNE 2012) – An upcoming federal court decision could consolidate the large number of Pradaxa lawsuits into one. What does this mean for the victims and families of those who have been harmed by the prescription blood thinner? Many believe that a lawsuit consolidation could be swifter justice and a better chance at compensation for those who have been injured by the anticoagulant.

Since its arrival on the market just a few years ago, Pradaxa (also known as Dabigatran) and its manufacturer Boehringer Ingelheim have been at the center of a serious controversy. Hundreds of patients who used the drug have claimed that it causes a serious and sometimes deadly side effect: internal bleeding that can sometimes not be stopped by medical treatment. While the drug has been approved to prevent strokes in patients with certain types of irregular heartbeats, it is becoming clear that the risks of taking the drug may far outweigh the benefits.

Here are just a few facts about the defective drug Pradaxa:

•   In December of last year, the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was investigating the safety of Pradaxa, just over a year after it initially approved the drug.
•   Earlier this month, Reuters interviewed a dozen of the top cardiologists in the country—all of which said they had serious concerns about the lack of a known antidote for Pradaxa bleeding emergencies.
•   In 2011, Pradaxa topped the FDA’s list of prescription drugs that caused serious adverse side effects, with 817 reports of serious complications from around the country and 542 deaths arising from stoke, hemorrhaging, renal failure, and liver failure.

Now, a large number of defective drug lawsuits are being filed against Boehringer Ingelheim that claim the pharmaceutical company knew about the risk of dangerous internal bleeding side effects but did not disclose the information.

“The fact that Boehringer Ingelheim was heavily marketing Pradaxa as a better alternative to Warfarin even after it was aware of hundreds of extremely serious internal bleeding incidents is absolutely unacceptable,” said attorney Matthew White. “We hope that the motion filed before the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation is approved so that all of the victims of this defective blood thinner have a better chance at justice—and we hope that all patients who have been harmed by this drug speak with an experienced attorney.”

The court should decide on the motion to consolidate in early July.
