June 18, 2012 - PRLog -- Rapid City, S.D. – The days of prospectors and minors pouring into the Dakota Territory in search of gold may be over, but memories of this and more of the history surrounding 1876 still live within the largest collection of Old West archives in the state- and it is now in Deadwood, SD.

The Days of ’76 Museum will display not only significant collections of horse drawn wagons, stage coaches, carriages, clothing, photos, and artwork, but will also showcase the newest addition of Old West Pioneer and American Indian artifacts, archives, firearms and memorabilia bought from Deadwood Training Post owner Don Clowser.

The new two story museum will consist of four main exhibits including the Days of ’76 Parade, Deadwood’s rodeo history, the collection bought from Don Clowser, and a collection of historical significant carriages. In addition, the upper level is devoted to a hands-on, kid-friendly Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association exhibit and the lower level contains a programming area for workshops, lectures and films.

In addition to a climate-controlled library on the main floor, a lobby, ticket area, merchandise store, coffee bar, and restrooms are available to better serve visitors.

The production of this 32,000-square-foot museum is directed by J. Scull Construction, a Rapid City general contractor.

“Deadwood is a great location for such a large display of artifacts because of the rich history that the community already has,” said Jim Scull, owner of the construction company. “The museum will now have the space, lighting, and overall environment needed to ensure that these artifacts are properly preserved.”

J. Scull Construction began the $6 million project in October 2010 and the Rapid City building company will have the museum completed by the weekend of June 16, during Wild Bill Days. Plans to develop additional exhibits such as an art walk at the entrance to the museum and programming areas where regular events such as cowboy poetry, Indian Markets, programs of horse culture and horsemanship, blacksmithing, and more are already underway as staff, residents, and visitors anxiously await the opening of this historic endeavor.
