Want to be a producer (or a 'gofer') of the next Caddy Shack?
Chip in some money and you can be on the set of a new golf comedy funded on KICKSTARTER and eBay. Veteran comedy producer Ken Dalton and director Paul Madden are shooting "COMICS OPEN" this summer in LA with a cast of comics led by Paul Rodriguez.
"It can take years to break into producing and get a screen-credit"
Paul Madden, a graduate of the prestigious National Film and Television School of England, has directed a number of low-budget films. "It's much harder to get a film made independently and with limited resources. You don't have the luxury of time. I love the idea of having interns and producers who have their own money in the film, alongside ours - we all are super-motivated to get it done, and done well."
The film is about a group of stand-up comics who must save 'the Old Comedians Retirement Home' from being closed by a corrupt mayor and an evil banker. They decide to throw a fund-raising golf tournament at a fancy country club. The comic's just canʼt help themselves as they proceed to defraud every major business in town - getting free cars for themselves, free food and booze, massage parlor credits, clothing etc etc.- all in the name of charity. As they compete against one another for more booty - their lies get bigger. Before long, everybody thinks that just about every major celebrity and sports figure is coming to the tournament and charity concert. And once it starts, it can't be stopped. In the end, celebrities do turn up, and with the unexpected help of the police chief, all the money goes into saving the old comics retirement home.
Comedians Paul Rodriguez and Judge Reinhold appeared in a short promo for the film that was shot by PGA Tour Entertainment. PGA Champions Tour player P.H. Horgan is also part of the production team and he will be wrangling his fellow pros to come and play in the filmed tournament.
On KICKSTARTER.com they are also offering golfers a chance to play in the filmed tournament. "For the promo shoot, we had Andy Murray (Bill's brother) and the CEO of LOUDMOUTH PANTS playing alongside P.H. Horgan and Paul Rodriguez," reports Madden.
PH Horgan comments, "We all had a blast. And that's the sort of experience we are selling on Kickstarter. We are saying - come and play with us for a week. You'll probably end up in the film, and you'll meet some very, very funny comics. Who knows, you may end up playing with them regularly after the filming's over."
Associate Producers and Executive Producers will not only be welcome on the set every day, but they will have some access to the editing suites, and will be able to view dailies. This kind of access to the inner workings of filmmaking is rarely available to outsiders.
Distribution plans for the finished film are up in the air at this time, partly because of the paradigm shifts in the overall industry.
"Video on Demand and digital distribution are changing all the rules," comments Dalton. "We know that the 68 million golfers who all love Caddy Shack are going to want to see this movie. It's a natural gift for Father's Day and Christmas for golfers. But until it's 'in the can' and we can screen it for buyers, we won't know its future. But everyone we have talked to says 'YES!" The world does need another golf comedy!"
