Podcast Hints at Romney-DeWitt Clinton Connection

200 Years ago, a Presidential challenger cobbled an uneasy coalition and ran a campaign in a few swing states focusing on the incumbent's mistakes. One podcast compares DeWitt Clinton in 1812 and speculates about Mitt Romney's campaign-to-come.

May 27, 2012 - PRLog -- PHILADELPHIA - Pa (May 27, 2012) - Is Romney the DeWitt Clinton of his day?  Well one podcast suggests that a way to look at the upcoming 2012 general election is to go back to an election 200 years ago.

On the 'My History Can Beat Up Your Politics' podcast, available on iTunes, a recent episode compares the current likely Republican nominee to the maverick Republican/Federalist DeWitt Clinton, former mayor of New York City and challenger to President Madison just as the war of 1812 was underway.  It was a strong challenge, and nearly upset the incumbent President and changed American history.  The podcast sees some comparisions between the election then and today, and suggests it might tell us what we can expect this summer and fall:

- DeWitt Clinton assembled an uneasy coalition of hawks and doves, of breakaway Republican party members who felt the war wasn't going well and angry that Virginia had too many Presidents and Federalist party members who wanted the war ended and to regain the standing of their nearly-vanquished party.

-DeWitt Clinton concentrated on a few swing states, in 1812 this meant his top target was Pennsylvania, where the electoral votes could swing the election.  In other states, opinion was firm for one man or the other, and no effort was made.

-DeWitt Clinton's campaign was soley focused on the mistakes of the incumbent President James Madison, notably his botched up invasion of Canada and failure to build a strong navy.  Although 2012 won't likely be fought on foreign policy, expect the administration's economic record to be attacked savagely this year.

-DeWitt Clinton's own character and political vacillation became an issue in the campaign as the President and his friends counterattacked, calling Clinton a 'notorious intriguer,' the 19th century equivalent of "He'll do anything to get elected."

The podcast stresses that every election is different and history doesn't always repeat itself, but might suggest patterns.

"For instance you might see Romney come out with a very specific set of economic actions that he will undertake that are easy to understand, but its far more likely he like we'll attack what the President has done and keep his plans vague." according to Bruce Carlson, host of the program.  "And expect the President to spend a lot more time attacking his challenger than defending his record, as if he was not living in the White House."
