May 17, 2012 - PRLog -- Although many top drugs will lose US patent protection over the next 5 years, sales from new and existing products will more than make up for any lost revenue in coming years. An aging population, particularly baby boomers who demand a better quality of life in retirement, continuing medical breakthroughs, and patient awareness will drive the demand for medication.

The United States drug market had sales last year of about $300 billion, with an annual growth rate of 5 percent, IMS said. And if Congress passes new health care legislation, according to a recent Credit Suisse report, could increase drug sales by $10.7 billion.

These revenue targets will drive a need for more experience pharmaceutical sales representatives.  Pharmaceutical sales training programs, such as the NAPRx's Certified National Pharmaceutical Representative (CNPR) certification, help to educate individuals trying to break into the field.

Pharmaceutical companies are looking for well trained representatives to promote their products, and handle the potential of sales increase. One reason that pharmaceutical companies prefer industry education and training is because they look to get newly hired candidates quickly out into a sales territory. If the new employee has limited training in pharmacology or the medical field then their training could last many weeks or months. This typically means no physician coverage for the assigned territory of the new employee while they are being trained. Thus the territories market share could be affected the longer it takes to train a new sales rep.

The National Association of Pharmaceutical Representatives® (NAPRx®) has developed the CNPR® Certification program to educate candidates so that they will be able to differentiate themselves from other candidates. The majority of entry level candidates do not know enough about the pharmaceutical industry, drug patents, FDA regulations, CDER regulations, laws governing the pharmaceutical industry, the anatomy, pharmaceutical terms and abbreviations, drug sampling rules, effective physician selling skills, pharmaceutical selling guidelines & regulations, managed care, etc.
