Egypt Salmonella Claims Expected to Rise Predicts ExpertTop Holiday Claims Experts, Simpson Millar claim that holiday illnesses eg Salmonella could rise in countries such as Egypt or Turkey and we could see an influx in British holidaymakers struck down by this travel bug whilst on holidays abroad.
By: Simpson Millar LLP Solicitors Egypt was identified in a study of 23,332 UK holidaymakers as the tourist hotspot for Salmonella ahead of both Turkey and Thailand. Head of Holiday Claims at Simpson Millar, Nick Harris, predicts an influx of enquiries in 2012 and said: “In the past two years we have been inundated with cases of Salmonella from holidaymakers returning from hotels in Egypt." "Often the cause of Salmonella food poisoning in Egypt is simply down to poor hygiene practices. For example we often hear of wild birds being allowed to freely fly around dining areas." "This may seem quite innocuous on the face of it but in truth birds carry disease which contaminates food and dining surfaces and is then ingested via the faecal-oral route." "In the past year we have dealt with dozens of cases where birds have been implicated”. One serious concern Nick Harris has is the effect that the economic climate may have on the quality of the food supplied at hotels to UK tourists visiting Egypt this summer. Nick fears that the troubles that have hit Egypt following the Arab Spring and the recession across Europe may impact on the health of tourists visiting Egypt this summer. In particular Nick is concerned that as tour operators put the pinch on their Egyptian suppliers to lower prices those suppliers who saw unprecedented numbers of empty beds last year will now be forced to seek ways of cutting back to save money. “It does concern me that hoteliers in Egypt are faced with the pressure of finding further ways to save expense after a disastrous year." "This could lead to cut backs in terms of the quality of the foods the Egyptian hotels are purchasing and possibly the sourcing of foods from less reputable suppliers who can supply produce at a lower cost. This is a real issue that tour operators will have to address." "There is also the very real issue that staff working at these hotels could be under pressure for fear of loosing their jobs which could lead to a greater risk of travel bugs like Salmonella occurring more frequently as staff who are ill return to work before they are fit and healthy, which could mean slips in hygiene standards."
