May 7, 2012 - PRLog -- CROSS-RHYTHMS – An Evening of Tap Dance, will be presented one night only on June 8, 2012 at the Performance Garage, 1515 Brandywine Street, Philadelphia, PA.  Produced by tap dancer and choreographer Pamela Hetherington, the concert will feature professional tap dancers Michele Dunleavy, Germaine Ingram, and Darrell Williams, along with Philadelphia-based modern dancer Leah Stein and London-based Bharatanatyam dancer, Suparna Banerjee.  Live musical accompaniment will be provided by the Jon Katz Quartet and other special musical guests.  Tickets are $20.

A cross-rhythm is a simultaneous use of two contrasting rhythmic patterns which cannot be separated without compromising the song.  The evening performance is organized around intricate pairings – both of dancers and of art forms.  Interdisciplinary duets will demonstrate the connections between tap, modern dance, and Bharatanatyam dance.  The evening will also celebrate the interplay between tap dance and jazz music with a restaging of Manhattan Tap’s seminal 1986 piece, “Scrapple from the Apple,” choreographed by Manhattan Tap founder, Heather Cornell.
“CROSS-RHYTHMS will showcase the dynamic possibilities of tap dance for Philadelphia audiences,” Hetherington notes.  “The idea for the show originated after I saw Michele Dunleavy’s and Suparna Banerjee’s innovative duet of tap and Bharatanatyam dance.”  ”From there, I brought together evening-length pieces which exemplified the themes of ‘cross,’ ‘pair,’ and ‘contrast.’

The performance will also feature up-and-coming saxophonist Jon Katz, a graduate of Temple University and a fixture on the Philly jazz scene. Appealing to jazz lovers across the Delaware Valley, Katz’s quartet will also perform original pieces and jazz standards throughout the evening performance.

Hetherington, a Philadelphia native, performed with Tap Team 2 from 1996-2011 and is the founder of Philadelphia Tap Teaser, a bi-yearly tap dance and jazz music performance series which gives tap dancers and jazz musicians opportunities to experiment and collaborate in open mic style performances.  Pamela Hetherington and Kat Richter founded The Lady Hoofers in 2011 and went on to produce two sold-out revues for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival in 2011.  The Lady Hoofers were recent featured performers at the City Hall Presents series.
