Dolls houses are built to standard doll house scale so furniture and decorations can universally be fitted into them. There are two standard scales for dolls houses: 1/12th scale and 1/24th scale. 1/12th scale is 12 times smaller than real size and 1/24th scale is 24 times smaller than real size. 1/12th scale is by far the most popular doll house scale and most furnishings and dolls houses are made to this scale.
Dollhouses come in many shapes and sizes and are designed to resemble homes from different periods in time. You could choose Victorian, Georgian, Tudor or Modern and that will pretty much decide what period furniture you buy. Although many people buy a house for the size and do not worry about what period it is…so they can decorate as they wish.
 The majority of doll houses come in kits and this is probably the most popular way to get started collecting. There are so many kits to choose from you can choose the design you like and set about adding your own style and touch to the house to make it your own. If you go to your local hobby store they can show you the kits. You might even want them to build it for you. The cost will vary depending on how much you want the store to do. They can built it simple or paint it and even wallpaper it and light it.
Then there are the ready built houses. They are a bit more expensive but it’s a pick up and go. Your local hobby store will be able to show you what is available.
The furniture is a matter of taste. How much do you want to furnish it and how elaborate.  From grand pianos to the silverware on your table. From dolls to outdoor furnishings.
