Salmonella Scare Leads to Fish Food Recall

April 17, 2012 - PRLog -- The Hartz Mountain Corporation of Secaucus, New Jersey is working with the US Food and Drug Administration in issuing a voluntary recall of their Wardly Advanced Nutrition Perfect Protein Tropical Flake Fish Food due to potential Salmonella contamination of the containers.

Four specific lots of the fish food have been recalled; all are of the 1oz size. The potentially contaminated product was shipped nationally from December 20, 2011 through March 15, 2012. A total of 7,056 containers are thought to be contaminated with Salmonella. All have the UPC number 0-43324-00591-7 and the contamination is limited to lot numbers PP34911, PP34912, PP35011, and PP35012. Salmonella was detected in each of the lots during a random quality test performed by Hartz. The source of the problem is yet unknown, but is being investigated by the company. Presently, there have been no reported illnesses as a result of the contamination.

According to the FDA, Salmonella can cause serious and potentially fatal infections in young children, elderly people, or any others with a weak or compromised immune system. Individuals infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, the Salmonella organism may get into the bloodstream and produce more severe illness.
