Tea is thought of as the working man’s drink and it is routinely enjoyed 3 or 4 times per day. Tea cultivation is a big business for India, as it is one of the largest tea producing countries in the world.
 
Chai, as tea is called in India, is more widely enjoyed at home or purchased from a street vendor. The social aspect of tea drinking exists, but it is more of an exception than the rule. There are Chai houses around major cities like Delhi and Mumbai, but tea is not an elitist drink as gourmet coffee is sometimes seen. Chai is very modestly priced, and likely will remain that way.

With half of the more than one billion residents of India under the age of 25, the boom of gourmet coffee and specialty coffee houses in India is easily explained. However, with a market the size of India, there is no doubt that both the tea and gourmet coffee industries will be well supported.
