April 4, 2012 - PRLog -- With so many home lighting choices it can be hard deciding on which to choose. From wall lights to table lamps there is an incredible amount of choice available which can be a little bit off putting. I find it easier to think about what I need for each room which helps narrow down the choices.

What do you use the room for?
The home lighting you choose should reflect what you use the room for. If you work from home or spend a lot of time on a computer then the room you work in should be well lit perhaps using a three or four ceiling light as well as a desk or table lamp. Work areas such as kitchens should have lots of light. Down lights are ideal for larger kitchens as they create spots of light where needed most rather than one central light trying to fill the room. For rooms such as bedrooms or lounges you do not need a lot of light so you can stick with lamps and ceiling up lights.

How large is the Room?
The larger a room is the more lights it will require. Try to think about how much light is needed and tailor what you buy to this. For example a room may only need a small amount of light but be quite large, so two smaller lights would be better than one large light. Wall lights and lamps would both be good for larger rooms. Thinking about where the points of light need to be will help you create your home lighting plan.

What is your budget?
Give yourself a budget and think about what you need to add and replace, then divide your budget between each room. If you create both a minimum and maximum budget for each room you can drastically cut down your options by looking at home lighting options within that range. This will also help you control your spend and ensure that you can get the result you want.

If you have a smaller budget then sticking to the current positioning of the lights may be a must, so adding freestanding lamps would be the best option. Otherwise consult an electrician who'll be able to guide you on where new light can be added and what that will cost.

Theme
Think about the overall image you are creating when you put a home lighting plan together and try to continue this though the home. It may even be possible to match the light fittings in some rooms creating a running theme, rather than having rooms which look like they could be in different houses.
