Neonatal Herpes Rates Too High; CBCD Says Provider Education Needs Improvement

March 25, 2012 - PRLog -- In a recent interview with Medscape.com,  Dr. Camille Introcaso, MD, from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, said “… neonatal herpes still occurs in the United States at an estimated incidence of 8 to 60 cases per 100,000 live births.” The Center for the Biology of Chronic Disease (CBCD) believes provider education should be improved to ensure that best practices are being used.

Dr. Introcaso continued saying, “Neonatal herpes has up to 30% mortality, and 20% of surviving infants have neurologic damage.”

One of the largest problems has to do with large numbers of physicians ignoring the guidelines issued by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) regarding neonatal herpes prevention.

Also in contrast to the guidelines, a few doctors thought cesarean delivery was indicated for women with a history of genital herpes, a history of a partner with genital herpes, or positive HSV2 serology alone.
