Follow on Google News | The Pros and Cons of Regiotrams (Tram Trains)Axel Kühn, Owner of Axel Kühn Consultancy, joins Construction IQ to discuss the Karlsruhe Regiotram project and the pros and cons of the light rail system (better TramTrain systems!) compared to other urban transport solutions.
By: IQPC - Helen Winsor Construction IQ: Great of you to join us ahead of the event. Firstly, what is your background within light rail consulting? A Kühn (or use consequently Kuehn): Looking at where I come from, the city of Karlsruhe, my background is certainly within the light rail tramway and tram train field, but I would also see myself in a wider sense as a public transport expert. I always try to be more a generalist than a specialist, looking at the interfaces between different fields and on best practices more than on the real details. Construction IQ: What was your involvement with the Karlsruhe Regiotram project? A Kühn: First of all, I would say I was involved with the first tram train lines, besides some, other, from the Karlsruhe perspective, less important urban projects. So the Karlsruhe Bretten line, the first tram train which opened in 1992, the one to Pforzheim or to Wörth, which followed in the years later, these have been some of my major projects in the first years. At that time, I was working as a planning engineer, basically on infrastructure design, and I brought the projects through the public inquiries. Axel Kühn will be speaking at The IQPC Urban Rail Infrastructure Conference, which will take place from 19 - 21 June, 2012, in Vienna, Austria.
