By: Georgina Stocks According to new research, the average journey time for Manchester commuters lasted five minutes short of two hours and covered 25.4 miles overall. This is the sixth year running when drivers around Manchester have suffered the longest rush-hour journeys in Britain. The average speed in Greater Manchester is almost a mile an hour slower than rush-hour traffic in London. The region has had the country’s slowest roads since 2004. ”Over the last decade the number of cars entering Manchesterat peak rush hour has dropped yet the traffic speeds are getting slower. Something must be causing that and disrupting the flow of traffic. It just seems to be that we have an unnecessary amount of traffic lights that don’t seem to work in any kind of synchronised way to make traffic run more smoothly,” said Sean Corker, of pressure group The Association of British Drivers. The research highlights that the average driving speed across the UK’s major cities during rush hour is just 15mph. 29% of car-based respondents said they had no choice but to drive with no other possible way of getting to the office available. In addition, 28% regarded public transport to be too inefficient while 18% considered it too expensive. Glasgow drivers experience the least amount of traffic jams on their daily drive to work, with an average speed of 18.7mph.
