By: shakir Bashundhara Group, country’s largest business conglomerate, uses latest technologies and raw materials to make sure the paper is hundred-percent eco-friendly, said Abu Tayeb, Advisor (press and media) of Bashundhara Group. The technologies include pulp, smoke-filtration machine, de-inking plant, water-recycling plant and effluent-treatment plant. Besides, the surroundings of three mills are furnished with trees so that officials and workers get a touch of nature during office hours. “We are using pulp, a highly expensive material, instead of wood, to save trees so that our environment is not affected. To check air pollution, we have installed smoke- filtration machine which emits carbonless smoke. A major portion of the generated smoke is being used to turn into energy,” said Abu Tayeb. He said, “All of our papers are 100% recycled as we use pulp instead of tree and paper wastage for producing newsprint and toilet tissue by recycling the waste paper.” Except toilet tissue, all kinds of tissues are made from pulp. “We put emphasis on the use of pulp as our country is getting bare day by day because of mindless tree cutting for different purposes, including paper production,” For making the best use of water, all the three paper mills were furnished with water- recycling plants where the same water is being used in different production processes. With the installation of effluent-treatment plant, not a single drop of water is allowed to go to the river without being filtered, said GC Majumder, head of project unit-1 paper mill. With the water-treatment plant, the best use of water has been ensured and nearly 80% of the total used water is reused for further production, he added. To save the environment and keep the country green, Bashundhara Group has totally forbidden the use of wood as raw material in producing paper in their paper mills. Most of the paper mills in the country are using wood as the main raw material for paper production, generating a huge amount of thick smoke, including harmful gases. People living near those paper mills usually face various respiratory problems because of the smog. Considering the matter, Bashundhara paper mills do not use wood. The smoke which is generated at different recycling steps is filtered before emitting into the air, said Md Mozammel Hossain, head of project unit-3 paper mill. A great portion of the smoke is used for another purpose through smoke-recycling machines. End
