Feb. 6, 2012 - PRLog -- Dr. White brings functional X-Ray technology to St. George. With the Innova Pain Clinic's digital X-Ray machine, Dr. White positions the patient into views that challenge the movement of the spinal joints.

The doctors at the Innova Pain Clinic will position the patient's neck into flexion to see if the bones in the neck slip forward, then into a view that stresses the patient into extension to see how the vertebra slip backward. In some cases, Dr. White will have the patient bend the neck to the right shoulder, then to the left shoulder. This is lateral flexion, and challenging the neck or low back into lateral flexion on X-Ray is rare.

Lateral flexion X-Rays have been shown to be a good predictor of the level of a herniated disc. This can be done without the costs and the hassles of ordering an MRI. Beyond that, the lateral flexion X-ray view will show how the bones in the neck or low back will or will not bend and rotate the way they should.

The way the bones in the spine bend and rotate together is known in spinal biomechanics as coupled motion. Chiropractors can look at the characteristics of coupled motion on X-Ray, and use that to determine the specific level of the spinal lesion. Our theory is that this specific area of poor coupled motion is the main generator of pain.

"This approach is very important in determining the exact nature and extent of an injury," reports Dr. White. "Take for example a whiplash injury.  Sometimes these cases go to trial and I have to be able to demonstrate to the court the level of an injury."

X-rays were invented in 1895. Since then, radiographic technology marched forward slowly. There were very few breakthroughs in X-ray technology. In the old days, you use to get exposed to a lot of radiation to get the image that you wanted. Then, even now in some cases, you had to wait until the film was physically processed in a machine with several different chemical. This was messy, dangerous, bad for the environment, and time consuming.

The Innova Pain Clinic of St. George Utah uses digital X-Ray technology. It is the only office in Southern Utah to utilize this breakthrough technology.  By using the latest in digital X-Ray technology, the doctors are able to take pictures of a patient's spine more efficiently, and with better results than with traditional X-Rays.  There are no messy chemicals, and no films to worry about.  Because it is all digital, with no photographic developing chemistry being dumped into the sewers, it is cleaner for the environment.

"Now for the first time," reports Dr. White, "a patient can take his chiropractic x-rays home with him.  He can copy them and send them out for a 2nd opinion.  He can send them to his relative who is a radiologist in some other state.  Or a patient can just print a picture and hang it on the fridge.  We, as the doctors in the case, get the vital information we need and the patient gets to keep a copy of his medical record."
