By: eBookGuides4Life.com A note from the Author, “September 11, 2001 stands out for most of us as the day the world changed. As I watched people struggling to deal with their lives in the aftermath of this horror, I empathized with their sense of confusion and frustration as I had spent the past eight years going through that same sort of uncertainty. During this period I had found a model of the self that made sense of what was happening to me and my family and provided me with a level of acceptance and understanding that nothing else managed to do. I first used this model for myself and then later incorporated it into my therapy practice, where it proved to be a useful tool in helping my clients figure out their lives. As I watched the world reeling in grief after 9/11, I realized how powerful this model was in explaining what was happening to each of us. I kept waiting for someone out there to incorporate it into their healing practices, whatever they were, but no one seemed to know anything about it. I began writing this eBook in order to share the model with the world, for it indeed can help us all understand ourselves in a way that nothing else does. Writing this eBook was not an easy process. In fact it was one that I hoped I wouldn’t have to complete. Every time a new book claimed to contain the answers to the self came out, I immediately bought and read it in hopes that it would mean that I could refer people to it, instead of finishing my own. None of these books come close to the information on the self that is shared in this manuscript. This isn’t to say that they are unimportant, but they are lacking in the ability to consider the whole picture. Each of them focus on their own small part of the self, some much better than others, but are insufficient in describing a self that can be used by each and every person in this world. “In Search of Self” uses the model of self as developed by Dr. William James in the early 1900’s to make sense of what happened to us on September 11th, and to describe a process in which each and every individual in this world can not only come to a clear and concise understanding and acceptance of who they are as a person, but also reach their full potential here on earth. This is a goal that is uppermost in the minds of many of us these days, as indicated by the interest in the self-help books that are available in the marketplace. Millions of volumes are sold to people who are desperately looking for answers. “In Search of Self” provides those answers in a way that nothing else does. It makes sense of who we are as a person, of how we developed to be this unique self, and how we can successfully make the changes we want without fear of failure, shame or guilt. It allows us to be okay as we are; the greatest gift that each of us can have. “In Search of Self” contains personal information of the author as an example of how a self fits within the model. This does not mean it is an autobiography or that it is a complete account of the author’s life, by any means. The personal information that is shared is meant only to be an example of how everything fits in the model. This appears to work well. Three individuals have read the manuscript in an attempt to determine whether it is too personal or not. Each of them claims that they became so involved in their own journey of self discovery that the author was forgotten. This is the ultimate goal of the author, to provide material which will be the impetus for the reader to take their own journey of self discovery. It has happened for each of these readers. They all claim that this manuscript has changed them in ways that nothing else ever has in their lives. They know now that it is okay to be the person they are and they are celebrating their ‘self’ in a way that they never have before.” Gail Gillingham Wylie, M.Sc. is an individual, marital and family therapist working in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada who focuses most of her energy working with people on the autism spectrum. She has a Bachelor’s of Art in Psychology from the University of Alberta and a Masters of Science in marital and family therapy from Loma Linda University, California. She is also a certified biofeedback therapist. Gail’s appreciation of the importance of the model of self development by William James came during her search for answers after her whole world seemed to crumble during her separation and divorce from her first husband. It was strengthened as she watched the world dealing with the aftermath of the atrocities of 9/11. This eBook shares that model with you. Gail Gillingham Wylie is a pioneer in the understanding of human beings. When she began working in the field of autism in 1988 she quickly realized that nothing we were doing was effective for this group of people. She began to collect the words of those on the spectrum in an effort to come to an understanding of what it feels like to have autism. She couldn’t believe that she was the first person in the world to choose this route fifty years after autism had first been defined in the medical community. Her efforts have opened up the world to an understanding of autism that we don’t get anywhere else. This work has provided her with quite a lesson in the tendency of every human being to judge another by one’s own body and experience and the damage that we do when we follow that practice. The model of self is another step in the journey of this pioneer. Gail is not content to live with bits and pieces of understanding. She needs a whole picture, one that makes logical sense when viewed as a whole, and in parts. This is what her new book allows us all to do. To understand ourselves as a complete picture, and to break that picture down into its component parts so that we can effectively make the changes we choose to become the person we were meant to be.
