Dec. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Menorahs can come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, colors, and materials. Every family’s menorah is special, but some amazing menorahs make more of a public splash than others. Take the world’s largest menorah in New York City, for example. Standing 32 feet tall and weighing a full two tons, this monolith of light shines brightly for eight days at Grand Army Plaza, at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street.

Menorahs do not need to be colossal to affect many people in a positive way. On December 5 of this year, two menorahs were auctioned off at “A Funny Affair for Autism,” a benefit fundraiser for research for autism. A hot pink menorah, dubbed “the gay menorah” by one of the auctioneers, was designed by fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi and purchased for $10,000 by Jim Simons, who has given millions to the cause. Even more impressive is the Adam Sandler Menorah, featuring notable Jews in entertainment from the funny man’s famous “The Chanukah Song,” (it sold for an impressive $25,000).

And not all amazing menorahs are physical – the idea of the menorah is very strong. Kids can learn all about it “The Amazing Menorah of Mazeltown” by Hal Dresner & Joy Fate, with illustrations by Neil Shapiro (http://redrockpress.com/jewishinterest.html#menorah). This wonderful book tells the story of Mazeltown, in the Cry-Me-a-River valley – a dreary village on the cold, dark days leading up to Hanukkah. Grown-ups schlepped though the streets by the inky river. Just as the holiday was to begin, Molly and Max stumbled on a most curious object in their father’s junkshop.

After they polished it, a most amazing menorah emerged, a menorah that day by day changed Mazeltown—brightening the streets, whitening the sheets, lofting the bagels, making the river glow with life and lighting up everyone’s heart.
