-- CAMBRIDGE, MA – Dr. Corey Lofdahl, a Senior Scientist at Charles River Analytics, is applying quantitative social science methods to counterinsurgency operations (COIN) efforts in Afghanistan. Dr. Lofdahl is serving overseas as part of a six-month effort to analyze and model the social processes underlying the governance and security efforts.
Dr. Lofdahl explained, “We’re applying research and development in quantitative analysis techniques in a very real-world setting. We're learning how to best answer the command's key questions, and at the same time, they're learning the benefits of analytic computational social science.”
He continued, “The effort uses system dynamics simulation and computational statistics to ‘map’ social processes in a way that meets the operational need for lighter weight and efficient models, versus more data- and computation-
Dr. Jonathan Pfautz, Vice President, Cognitive Systems, said, “Corey's work in Afghanistan represents the dedication of our staff to helping our military forces through applying our cutting-edge research—no matter where or when. We are very proud of him, and are thrilled that not only is his work being well received, but is making a real difference in operations.”
