Dec. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- This morning, I watched my rooster, named KFC, chase and pin down his main squeeze, Chicken Licken, with much squawking and natural competence. As nature took its course, I thought about the nature of competence and how competence in certain areas comes so naturally to some of us, and how we have to work so hard to build competence in other areas.

Our existing Member Criteria and Standards of Competence Framework defines the following 5 core areas of competence, and I would invite you to think about these areas and your relative levels of competence in each of them:

The ability to create rapport and build relationships;
Self-awareness and self-management;
Make explicit own beliefs and attitudes;
Effective communication;
Delivering desired and measurable results.

They are fairly generic, and whether you are a coaching or mentoring practitioner, or a full time employee utilising coaching and/or mentoring skills in your practice, a training organisation, a student member, a buyer of coaching and/or mentoring services, these broad competency categories can be defined for each of your specialist areas of operation. I challenge you to do so, and to work on continuously raising the bar within each of these areas.

By the way, Peer Resources - a world leading non-profit organisation that provides the most widely used resource manuals, technical articles, and curricula around the world has given COMENSA the accolade of being "one of the few coaching associations that publishes articles free of agendas & sales pitches - based on the October issue!

I'm proud that a leading international organisation is reading - and valuing - the content of our newsletter. The comment above was sent out on the Peer Resources Twitter account during October. It is testimony to the calibre of our contributors' writing, and to the editorial standards that we uphold as a Proudly South African organisation. Clearly, our strong editorial stance has paid off.Follow the link below for the full newsletter, and make sure you subscribe so you don't miss out on future issues.  It's FREE!
