By: A & R Select Lisa Barrett has been singing all of her life. She grew up singing in the church folk group and ringing in the hand bell choir with her father who was director. She also gravitated toward school chorus and musicals. One thing that she didn’t do was write songs until the passing of her young nephew Austin at the tender age of 2 years old from cancer. About a year after his passing, walking passed a photo of her nephew, she stopped and her eyes met his and instantaneously words and melody began to fill her heart and mind and she was compelled to write. The song she wrote was titled “When You Look at Me”. Since that time she continued to write and record and in 2005 she recorded her first album called “When You Look At Me” in Nashville. She donated part of the proceeds to a Hospice program for children called Essential Care in Austin’s memory. The video of the single “When You Look at Me” on youtube, has received such heartfelt comments. One gentlemen wrote, “Pretty amazing song as I am a 36 year old man I sat here and wept listening to this beautiful tribute. I will ask many people to vote!!! Good Luck Lisa”. The single “When You Look at Me” recently won Best Original Song Worldwide in June of 2011. This was an international online songwriting competition where the public voted. After five months and six rounds of competition, her tribute song for her nephew Austin won! You can log on to www.bestoriginalsong.com to see the song on the homepage and read press release, comments and media articles. People were drawn to this song due to its storyline. Lisa couldn’t ask for anything more. This song must have been cathartic for her as it helped her deal with that painful chapter in her life. The CD is titled “When You Look at Me” which includes many heartfelt emotional songs such as: “Let’s Roll” which is a tribute to the heroes of Flight 93 on September 11, 2011. “Rush” which relates to the feelings of instantaneous joy when Lisa received her first copyrights in the mail. “Punchin’ In Punchin’ Out” is a humorous song rushing to get to the time clock everyday to punch in and to punch out becoming an automatic, robotic ritual. Another great review came from Joseph Greco on October 7, 2010 who is a singer and songwriter. He heard “I Belong with You” and commented, “Wow! It’s got to be one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard. I played it to my wife and dedicate it to her. It has now become Our Song. We just love it…brought tears to my eyes and THAT IS NOT EASY TO DO – Just WOW!” Lisa Barrett sings about the day to day events and experiences that ordinary people have. Perhaps the angel that sits on her shoulder is her nephew bringing the inspiration, comfort and motivation to write. She found her voice through an unexpected force of nature. As her first CD, I would say that she is having no trouble expressing her thoughts and emotions so eloquently with class and dignity. Her story telling, lyrics and gentle delivery is so relatable to audiences worldwide. They are drawn to her music like a magnet. Her music speaks for them. One particular review that encapsulates all of her skills, talent and purpose is one particular review from Rochester At Home website: To my knowledge, country musicians are few and far between around these parts, but when you find one – man, are they good. Very much is the case of Lisa Barrett. Her newest release When You Look at Me is probably one of the most uplifting and refreshing records I’ve personally heard in a while. The big selling point of the record is obviously Barrett’s soaring vocal work. They are at all times fresh and comforting and on par with that of country heavyweight’ Speaking of her vocals, her lyrics are smart too. Let’s Roll is a majestic tribute to those who perished on 9/11 aboard United Flight 93 and it even has been entered into the national archives for future generations of historians and educators to study. She deals with all sorts of sensitive issues such as heartbreak, loneliness, standing up and being strong, and knowing when to leave bad situations. One overwhelming theme through the record is the remembrance of her nephew Austin, whom she lost to cancer. She named the CD after something she said to herself when she was looking at a picture of him, and the title track of the record, When You Look at Me, is about him as well. Aside from all of the deeper meanings housed on this CD, the music is good. Overall it really reminds me of Shania Twain’s album, Up!, very poppy and upbeat, and clear, crisp, and meaningful throughout. This is one of those records that you can pop into your CD player no matter what mood you’re in and it will cheer you up or make you think – whatever you need. It is definitely a mood changing album. What makes this CD better than the music itself is the fact that a portion of the proceeds from this CD will be donated to Essential Care for Children, a pediatric home care program for children with life-threatening illness, and their families.
