Nov. 18, 2011 - PRLog -- Houston, TX – This holiday season, Shoot2Score Hoops (S2S) is offering parents a babysitting alternative while they finish their last minute shopping. Shoot2Score Hoops (S2S) is hosting its 2nd annual Winter Basketball Camp at Lily Grove Church, December 19th – December 22nd from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Shoot2Score Hoops, a non-profit organization created to give back to the Houston-area youth and community, plans on turning nearly 50 local youth into premiere basketball players, at its winter basketball camp, beginning December 19th.

“Shoot2Score Hoops is more than just a basketball program, it’s an opportunity for youth to build discipline, character and self-confidence,” Sloan, Houston-native said.
The four-day camp for boys and girls ages 8-18, offers extensive training on shooting, dribbling, rebounding and playing sound defense in addition to the opportunity to be seen by AAU and high school coaches. From 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day, the kids will have the opportunity to work with camp mentors, comprised of high school coaches, college and professional basketball players. All camp participants will receive a camp T-shirt, a photo, basketball certificate and other prizes.

Unfortunately, many of the disadvantaged youth targeted for this program, can’t afford the $150 registration fee for the basketball camp. Sloan is hoping local business owners and/or individuals are compelled to give a child the opportunity to not only perfect their basketball skills, but to learn critical life lessons under the mentorship of professional athletes and coaches, by volunteering to cover the registration fee for any child in need.

“My goal is to provide an atmosphere where children can have fun and learn the valuable lessons youth sports can teach them,” Sloan said. “Sadly, many of our camp hopefuls can’t afford the registration fee and will need sponsorship to participate.”

S2S’s mission statement emphasizes its desire to provide “positive development of underprivileged boys and girls in Houston, Texas through basketball and character building programs.”

“I want the kids to understand that they can use basketball to facilitate what they want to do in life,” Sloan said. “Whether they want to be an engineer or a teacher, they can use the skills they learn here to achieve those goals.”

Sloan said he knows that sponsoring a child to participate in this winter’s basketball camp will make a lasting impression, supporting a child to achieve his or her dreams.
“It is our hope that participants grow not only academically, but athletically, as well,” Sloan said. “Student athletes will be able to take these skills and apply them to all of life’s challenges, showing our participants that there is a new avenue towards their dreams!”

As a former Division-I basketball player at TCU and current professional player in Europe, the Eisenhower High School alumni said his inspiration to create Shoot2Score Hoops came from the basketball programs he attended as a child. Those camps helped shape me to become a better athlete and motivated me to excel both on and off the court, Sloan said.

“Growing up, I realized that many of my peers didn’t have the opportunities to get exposure to college life, or to see the world outside of our neighborhood,” Sloan said. “I want to show young people what life has shown me by way of competitive athletics – that there is more to life than what we are immediately exposed to.”
