By: Move to Amend Palm Beach County Bonnie Redding, 561-762-8191 INTERVIEWS: (North Palm Beach, Florida) - Move to Amend Palm Beach County and the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the Palm Beaches, will host an event beginning with a presentation by David Cobb, national spokesperson for Move to Amend, entitled “Creating Democracy and Challenging Corporate Rule”. Part history lesson and part heart-felt call to action, the event will be held at the First Unitarian Universalist Congregation in North Palm Beach on Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 9:30-11:15 am. This event which is open to the public and free will be followed by a training participatory workshop from 11:30 am-5:00 pm. The impetus for Move to Amend began in January 2010 when the U.S. Supreme Court opened the floodgates to unlimited corporate spending on elections based on an egregious ruling in Citizens United v. FEC. Since then a national movement has been growing to amend the U.S. Constitution to remove personhood rights from corporations and to say that money is not speech. Cobb, an attorney and organizer for the Move to Amend coalition, will train local residents on the history behind the Supreme Court decision and how they can work to abolish "Corporate Personhood" and reestablish a government of, by, and for the people. “Corporate Personhood commonly refers to a court-created precedent that gives corporations constitutional rights intended solely for human beings. The Supreme Court ruled that a corporation was a ‘legal person’ with 14th Amendment protections before they granted full personhood to African-Americans, immigrants, natives, or women,” says Cobb. The workshop will focus on how local residents can join the national movement against Corporate Personhood. “We recognize that amending the Constitution to restore the power of the people over corporations will not be easy, but we know correcting the Supreme Court is imperative to the progress of our nation,” stated Cobb. Over 145,000 people have signed an online petition supporting a constitutional amendment at www.MoveToAmend.org.
