By: grace kang Milk + Bookies is a nationwide charitable organization that inspires children to give back, using books as its currency. After finding great success in Southern California, Milk + Bookies formed its Community Ambassador Board in 2011 to bring their work to communities across the nation, including New York City. Event date & location: Saturday, December 3rd, 2011 11:00am to 3:00pm Pink Olive 167 5th Ave Park Slope, Brooklyn RSVP to: concierge@pinkolive.com At the Pink Olive’s Children’s Holiday Book Drive Party, children are invited to bring or purchase new books to donate to children who have none of their own, thereby supporting literacy efforts as well as inspiring a new generation of philanthropists. There will be story time readings performed by three very special children’s book authors, listed below in order of appearance: 11am - Sally Lloyd-Jones: 12pm - Brett Helquist: Author/illustrator of Bedtime for Bear; Brett will conduct a drawing activity as well, teaching children how to draw a bear. 1pm - Caitlin Friedman: Author of How Do You Feed a Hungry Giant? Milk and cookies will be served. The Madison Square Boys & Girls Club will receive all books donated at this event, and will distribute them to the children they serve across the city. Milk + Bookies books go to children and teens of all ages, hoping to counteract the fact that majority of low-income households do not contain books and give each child the opportunity for success that they deserve. Studies have also shown that a home library is a larger determining factor of a child’s literacy and likelihood to attend college than any other factor, including the education levels and professions of the parents. Milk + Bookies was founded in 2004 by Meredith Alexander, a mother of two sons who resides in Los Angeles. In 2009, Heidi Lindelof and Laura Zimmerman, also L.A. based moms, joined Meredith to help Milk + Bookies grow. That same year, Milk + Bookies was designated a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation. Feed For Life is a foundation in the process of being formed by Grace Kang, owner of Pink Olive Inc. Its goal is to provide funding to organizations and charities around the world that benefit children’s mind, body and spirit.
