Google Introduces Freshness Algorithm With Serious Implications For SEO

Hot on the heels of the latest Panda algorithm update, Google announces a new set of codes likely to affect the work of SEOs for good via their official online blog

Nov. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- SEO companies are used to adjusting to Google’s ever-changing algorithms. It’s these intricate codes that determine the way in which Google presents results to the user based on a specific search query. While all search engines operate in the same way, Google is the only search generator that alters their algorithms so publicly via their official blog, letting webmasters and SEO agencies in on their latest developments and so allowing the rest of the world to adjust their optimisation campaigns accordingly.

Google previously released their Caffeine Web Indexing System to allow the search engine to identify and index new content quickly and efficiently. The latest update, announced late last week, focuses primarily on finding the freshest content possible to display ahead of out-dated articles and resources, on the basis that the newer the content, the more relevant the entry.

Google bosses have identified that anyone typing in a generic search term such as ‘Olympics’ is likely to be searching for information about the upcoming Olympic Games in 2012 and won’t be as interested in archived content.

This method won’t apply to every single key term, though. In his most recent blog post outlining these changes, Amit Singhal, a Google employee, stresses that ‘different searches have different freshness needs’ and that although the code concentrates on finding ‘up to the minute answers’, putting the freshness algorithm into action for every single search term simply wouldn’t be practical.

This update has huge implications for the work of SEO agencies, mainly because experts have suggested that its implementation could lead to an indexing ‘overhaul’ for up to 35% of websites, suggesting that while some webmasters may experience an impressive jump in SERPs, others will suffer potentially damaging relegation.

SEO Positive was established in 2007 in Chelmsford, Essex with the aim of bringing effective yet affordable online marketing services to companies from all industries and backgrounds. The company offers a huge range of services including search engine optimisation, Pay Per Click account management, social media marketing and website design.
