On October 17th, 2011 Mr. A M (Tony) Kennedy of Ariel Maritime (UK) Ltd. was one of the invitee’s to the All Party Parliamentary Group meeting and conference on Maritime Security Responses to Piracy off the Coasts of Africa.

This is the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Great Lakes Region of Africa for the Combating of Piracy Week, 18th– 20th October

The Maritime Security Responses to Piracy off the Coasts of Africa is a hot issue and a very important one that is often in the news.

The panel focused on the security measures and international responses to implement in order to provide a long-term solution to the rise of piracy off African shores. This meeting was held on Monday 17th October 2011, 18h30-20h00 in the Committee Room 13, Palace of Westminster

The meeting was followed by a reception in the Macmillan Room, Portcullis House, Westminster, London.

Some of the Speakers included:

•   Mike Penning MP, Member of Parliament for Hemel Hempstead and Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport

•   Eric Joyce, Member of Parliament for Falkirk and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Great Lakes region of Africa

•   Martin Paisley, Director of Britannia Maritime Security, former Chief Operating Officer for Petrolia ASA and former Vice-President for Smith International Inc.

•   Steven Jones, Founder of the Security Association for the Maritime Industry and of the International Dynamic Positioning Operators Association, and member of the Nautical Institute

Tony Kennedy has been very active in the Piracy issue and also in maritime safety in general. Ariel Maritime is the general agent for TransAfrica Line that has maintained an express cargo service from the UK to Africa for over 30 years. Tony Kennedy had hopes to work with the late Senator Ted Kennedy in the United States to bring more awareness to the piracy issue but due to Senator Ted Kennedy’s untimely passing these plans are on hold.
