Oct. 22, 2011 - PRLog -- If you are a young professional, you maybe exploring different options including industry, career, position and location. The society has changed so much over the last 15 years, so it is important to plan ahead and also look for the right location & industry to join.

Here are some facts we have found during our recent survey:

Find Locations where Young Professionals are regarded

In many countries, being young is actually a disadvantage, where employers do not regard their skills highly. In other countries, particularly the United States, young professionals are more highly regarded as employers believe they can bring in new skills, new spirits an creating new opportunities.

This also reflects on the company culture as well, for instance, in many companies in Asia, young professionals = cheap workers.

You studied for 4 years as a an engineer and end up working as a call centre customer service, you studied 6 years as a financial accountant and had to work as a bank teller or receptionist.

These types of companies do not regard your skill, but judge your age and experience more than your skills.

Things are generally little better for young industries, such as Internet and technology or services companies; where you are encouraged to bring proposals and also discuss with management team about new ideas.

Find Cities with younger population demographics

This is quite an interesting point being discussed in our survey. Young professionals mention that by being in “younger” cities or countries, they can find more opportunities, as there tend to more entrepreneurs in their peer, also more networking opportunities for them to find new opportunities and able to set up their own business ventures.

Most developed economies are ageing economies, apart from the United States. Ageing is particularly a major issue in Europe, Japan and China.

The United States is lucky in this regard; which has escaped ageing problem - cities like San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, San Jose, Dallas, Houston or Charlotte are considered as good cities for young professionals because of their demographics.

Big is not necessarily beautiful

You have heard this many times I am sure. If you look at the recent layoff announcements, almost all of them were exclusively concentrated on very large corporations.

Larger corporations actually do not offer better career opportunities for many young professionals. Although they do have career-training program in place, your skills are sometimes not highly valued as in the medium sized corporations.

Interestingly, the salary offered by medium sized corporations can actually be higher than those offered by larger corporations, it is also much easier and faster to progress to senior positions.

For young professionals, the important thing is to obtain experience instead of looking for a long-term security. If you have the experience and the skill, then you can open up more career opportunities instead of “stuck up” with a corporation forever.

Look for International Experience

More and more corporations value international experience, particularly for companies in the United States; where it is clear that export will play a crucial part in the US’s future economy. More companies in the US are considering about exporting than ever, and most of them have done so successfully and expanding their exporting activities.

International experience is therefore, highly regarded by these exporters or would-be exporters. It is highly encouraged if you can, either to work or study abroad for a number of years, and if you can pick up a second language, that will all assist your career opportunities.

Top business schools also emphasize on “globalization”. Exporting, international marketing will be regarded as top priority for many corporations over next decades.
