Oct. 3, 2011 - PRLog -- An RTI was filed with the MCI and have got the following response from them.

1.   Does MCI have the right to allow its members to put “DR” in front of their names? (Kindly State the supporting Documents/Acts in which this is stated)
2.   An Indian Citizen wants to avail of an X Ray (Eg: X Ray of the Wrist due to wrist pain), Does he need the prescription of a MBBS graduate for the X ray (the question is can he ask for the X Ray by himself)?

The Ans that they gave are given below:
Ref No: MCI 211(2)(RTI)/2011-Ethics/37707 Dated 29.09.11
1.Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations , 2002 as amended from time to time are silent in this regard.

2.Your kind attention is invited to clause 7.20 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations , 2002 as amended from time to time which reads as under: “A physician shall not claim to be a specialist unless he has special qualification in that branch”

This means that MCI doesn't give any MBBS graduate any right to put DR in front of their names.

IMA trying to put brakes on our professional development does not help us nor the public. Considering the future and the amount of load that can be taken off from their shoulders, as well as the benefits for public from getting the right PT assessment and treatment, IMA should have been helping us grow. I feel all this problem is due to the misunderstanding of IMA that we are encroaching into their territories
