Sept. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- The people at nuSoftware are very happy to announce their latest version (2011.09.19) of nuBuilder, the open source web-based application builder.

This is a major release containing a completely redeveloped Report Writer GUI.

The update includes :

●   Multiple-Object move and resize with a mouse
●   Send Objects to front or back
●   Object spacing
●   Mutiple-Object cloning
●   Multiple-Object align and sizing
●   Easier grouping and sorting.

nuBuilder is now an even more powerful tool for mySQL developers producing back-office applications or management reporting.

nuBuilder is the world’s only open source application builder that can reside in the cloud for both development purposes and general back-office use.

Unlike other application development environments, nuBuilder is not developed in one place and uploaded to another. nuBuilder is in fact both an application tool and a back office application at the same time. Developers that login in with the ‘globeadmin’ username receive the ability to add and alter Forms and Objects as well as create powerful reports using PHP, SQL and the Report Writer GUI.

Users of the back-office application can log in and navigate through records while editing and running reports, all based on their access permissions.

While general users make changes to information like customer or financial records that remain stored in their nuBuilder application, the same is true of any changes made by the developer. Both have their changes recorded in the same application.

This means that backing up both the application and the application’s data can be done in a single file and, if needed, restored onto another server. This retains not only the exact business information but also the exact look and feel of the application.

The main power that nuBuilder gives the developer is the ability to rapidly create an application.

The reason for this power is twofold.

Firstly, nuBuilder has been designed to specifically make back-office applications such as CRMs, timesheets or even accounting systems or ERPs. It does not try to reinvent the wheel with things like email and calendars (though these systems can often be easily integrated with nuBuilder).

The other reason nuBuilder makes an ideal Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool, is that nuBuilder has a consistent navigation interface built around a simple pattern referred to as the two-screen model.

This two-screen model has been developed around the simple principle that there are only two things you need to do in a back office application: find a record and edit that record. This philosophy stands true whether you are creating an invoice, a customer or even a new access level.

The first of these two screens is the Browse Form. This Form displays records row by row in columns much like a table. Above this table is a text field that is used to filter the records below, much like a search with Google would filter web pages, filtering on one or more words or phrases, each separated by a space. Unlike Google’s search though, nuBuilder can search on parts of words, allowing filtering using even just one or two letters. This creates a powerful search that can eliminate thousands of records with just a few keystrokes.

Once filtered, these rows can be sorted by clicking on the column titles, toggling ascending and descending after each click.

In some cases (if the current user has permission) a ‘Print’ button will appear on the right of the search box. The user can click this button to open a new window showing an HTML table holding the records in the exact filtered and sorted format of the Browse Form. This can then be copied and pasted into a spreadsheet for future manipulation.

If the required row is not there, adding a new record can be done by simply clicking the “Add Record” button to the right of the search text box.

Otherwise, once found, the required record can be highlighted by hovering the mouse over its row and by clicking the user will be taken to the second Form of this two-screen model, the Edit Form.

The features of the Browse Form (filtering, sorting, exporting) remove the need for a developer to invent these, dramatically reducing the development cycle.

The Edit Form consists of a number of Object types, each having its own purpose, helping users quickly fill in information, restrict fields to certain values or format values that have been entered. These Objects can stop a record being incorrectly saved and means developers can create validation rules by making simple choices.

The power that nuBuilder gives the user comes firstly from the simple look and feel of the two-screen model that quickly becomes familiar to a new user along with the built-in features that the Browse and Edit Forms contain.

One main component of a back-office application is Reporting. While a lot of data can be simply extracted from the Print button on the Browse form, many reports require more complicated filtering parameters and formatting. As reports are added, the Browse Form is used to organise and quickly access them.

Once choosing a Report or “Activity” from this Browse Form an Edit Form is displayed that can hold parameters such as From and To dates or Product Categories, that can be used to return the exact information required by the report.

While database applications have been around for years, nuBuilder has made the innovation of providing a simple-to-use Application Builder that would otherwise require a sophisticated combination of PHP, SQL,HTML, CSS and javascript to build and run.

As technology is changing and business processes move away from the PC and into the cloud, allowing simultaneous access by devices like laptops, tablets and smart phones, it is important that these applications can be built on easy to use and develop, agile platforms like nuBuilder.
