Sept. 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Design/builder Miller Construction Company has launched the major renovation and expansion of Fisher Island Club’s Spa and Fitness Center at the world-class private island residential community and club, located just off Miami’s shoreline.

On track for completion in summer 2012, the 24,000-square-foot Spa and Fitness Center and its grounds will feature luxurious lobby and treatment areas, a state-of-the-art fitness facility and six new pools, including spa, cold plunge, tranquility and roman bath pools, as well as a refinished lap pool.

Chris Hannaka, Miller project executive, said the design and construction team is using Building Information Modeling (BIM) three-dimensional imaging technology to achieve efficiencies in renovating and expanding the building, which was originally the private-plane hangar at the 1920s-era Vanderbilt family Fisher Island estate.  BC Architects of Miami designed the renovation and expansion.

“For this complex mechanical, engineering and plumbing challenge, creating a digital model of the entire project in Revit Building Information Modeling software by Autocad prior to construction proved a great advantage,” said Hannaka.  “BIM ensures that every component fits within the existing building’s space.  Finding and correcting potential ‘collisions’ in ductwork and plumbing, for example, is much faster and far less costly in the design stage than in the field.”

Since access to the island is only by barge or ferry, Miller’s precise staging of deliveries to the tight site has been essential.  With many condominiums and club facilities close to The Spa and Fitness Center site, the project team is minimizing any interruption to residents and guests, Hannaka added, and is drawing on experience gained in creating facilities including the Spa at Lago Mar, Fort Lauderdale.

The Spa and Fitness Center is Miller’s latest project for Fisher Island Club, where the Florida construction services firm recently completed an upscale salon and renovation of several historic Vanderbilt estate guest cottages.
