Introduction of titanium and titanium alloy

Aug. 29, 2011 - PRLog -- Titanium's density is low, as 4.5g/cm3, only 60% of iron, usually called as light metals with aluminum, magnesium etc., the corresponding titanium, aluminum, magnesium alloy is called light alloy. Many countries recognize the importance of titanium alloy materials, have been on the research and development, and have been applied.

Titanium is developed in the 1950s as an important structural metal, because of its high strength, good corrosion resistance, high heat resistance and easy soldering, etc. titanium are widely used in various fields, especially high strength, easy welding performance is conducive to the manufacture of golf club head.

The first practical success of titanium alloy is the Ti-6Al (aluminum)-4V (alum) alloy, which developed in the United States in 1954. Ti-6Al-4V alloy achieve a good level in the heat resistance, strength, ductility, toughness, formability, weldability, corrosion resistance and biocompatibility aspects. Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy consumption accounted for all 75 to 85%. Many other alloys can be seen as Ti-6Al-4V alloy modified.

Currently, the world has developed hundreds of titanium, the most famous are twenty to thirty kinds of alloys, for example, there is Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-2Al-2.5Zr, Ti -32Mo, Ti-Mo-Ni, Ti-Pd, Ti-811, SP-700, Ti-6242, Ti-1023, Ti-10-5-3, Ti-1100, BT9, BT20, IMI829, IMI834, etc.; for the club made a 10-2-3, SP700, 15-3-3-3 (commonly referred to as β-titanium), 22-4, DAT51.

Titanium can be divided into α, α + β, β-type titanium alloy and aluminum intermetallic compounds (TixAl, where x = 1 or 3) four classes. The following table lists the four categories and characteristics typical of titanium.

  α Ti-5Al-2.5Sn
  Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo General strength and toughness, good welding performance, strong anti-oxidation, high creep strength
Rarely used in the manufacture of golf on the head of legs.

  α + β Ti-6Al-4V
  Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo Strength and toughness above the average, it can be heat strengthened, weldability, fatigue performance
More used in casting head, such as irons, fairway woods and so on.

  β Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al
  SP700
  Ti-15Va-3Cr-3Al-3Ni
  Ti-8Cr-5Mo-5V-3Al High strength, heat treatment to strengthen the ability, malleability and good cold formability
Can be adapted to a variety of welding methods.
More used in forging the head.
TixAl Ti3Al (α2) and TiAl (γ) with temperature is expected to reach 900 ℃, but poor toughness at room temperature plastic
