Also known as biotin, this protein eventually became one of the most fundamental components of the molecular biologist’s toolkit. During the 1940s, a young scientist named Edmond Emerson Snell chanced upon the high affinity bonding observed between avidin and biotin while investigating vitamin deficiency in young chicks. These days, this strong bond is utilized in a wide range of systems, such as the labeling of oligonucleotides with fluorescent molecules.
