LOCALS INVITED TO VIEW RENOVATED OBSERVATORY TOWER

With A-list celebrities filming in Falmouth, as well as the popular Henry Lloyd Falmouth week due to start, the owners of a unique property in the town are looking to offer a bird’s eye view from their “Observatory Tower”!

Originally built in Falmouth by The Poly in 1869, the Observatory Tower was one of only seven meteorological observatories in the country.  With 360° views of the land, sea and sky, peo50ple used it to watch and identify incoming weather until 1885.

Purchased at Auction in 2009, the current owners have spent two and a half years sympathetically renovating the property, to turn it into an awe-inspiring holiday home.  With a third floor living room and top floor observation deck, locals are being given the chance to explore its charm on Wednesday 24th August, when they are invited to visit.

The owners said, “During its renovation, a lot of locals have expressed interest in the Tower and we are keen to offer them the chance to see it for themselves now that it is finished.  We are planning a charity open day later this month, but due to the size and nature of the building, it is proving to be quite a logistical challenge to arrange.  We need to gauge interest first, so that we can work out the best way to arrange it.”

Julianne Shelton, owner of Cornish Gems lettings agency managing the property said, “We are thrilled with the recent addition of The Observatory Tower to our collection of luxury holiday homes.  It is a fascinating building, which has been lovingly restored by its new owners.  Our first paying guests start arriving from 12th August, however the owners want to provide an opportunity to invite local people to come and explore the Observatory and enjoy its 360° views across Falmouth.”
The Observatory Deck provides panoramic views and features a highly unusual camera obscura.  A new roof was needed and its dimensions were critical in order for the camera to work.  The camera has been fixed in one position for many years, but Pendennis Shipyard is helping to free it so that it can rotate once more.

Mr Susnjara, who owns the property with his wife, said: “We are delighted to be getting the camera obscura working again, but we are still a way off completing it, as it has been fixed in one position for many years and we would like to be able to rotate it. Pendennis Shipyard helped to provide the bearing for it to be able to do this, and they are helping once again with the drive gear. Our design brief for The Observatory Tower has always been ‘The Weather’ which respects its meteorological roots. We have implemented creative solutions to some unusual problems, as the shape and design of the building resembles a lighthouse. It has been a challenge to get the design right and we are looking forward to receiving feedback from our first guests that book through Cornish Gems.”

Space is at a premium in such a small building, so creativity was needed to design alcoves, cupboards, bathroom spaces and the kitchen.  There is a purpose and a story behind every alcove, door, cupboard and cupboard within a cupboard.

Mr Susnjara added, “Getting the staircase right was tricky. It dominates almost every room of the building. We wanted it to be discreet when viewed from within the room but have ‘wow’ factor when walking up and down it. I think of it as a piece of furniture and believe we have succeeded in achieving what we wanted.  We have also installed a bar area on the Observatory Deck which proved to be one of my biggest challenges!”
