An opportunity for a brighter, better future

In Tondo, Manila, some Chinese-Filipino students don’t go to school driving their own cars or carrying the latest cell phones or laptops. They don’t even look forward to inheriting a successful family business.

Aug. 4, 2011 - PRLog -- These Tsinoy students come from mostly low-income families. Their parents barely make ends meet selling different goods in Binondo and Divisoria or doing odd jobs. Providing for a college education is something that they have to work hard and save for.

Yet this school year, 10 of these students will have the chance to study at the Chiang Kai Shek College (CKSC), with some help from the PSBank Educational Assistance Program.

The program, which started in 2008, provides PhP200,000 worth of scholarship grants every year to 10 underprivileged but deserving students in the Chinese community. The scholars are also invited for on-the-job training at PSBank and are given priority hiring status.

This year, the program was renewed through the signing of a memorandum of agreement and presentation of the 2011-2012 scholars, namely: Kathrinna Palo, Mikee de Leon, Jennica Ong, Charmaine Anne Chi, Cheene Lee, Princess Sia, Katrina Tee, Jessica Lhay Asaña, Sarah Kristine de Asis and Mary Grace Khu. They were chosen based on their family income, academic standing and good character.

In her welcome remarks, CKSC president Dr. Bee Ching Ong Kian Koc encouraged the scholars to take advantage of the free college education. “A great opportunity comes once in a lifetime and today marks the beginning of that great opportunity for you.”

“Acquire all possible knowledge and skills and build something of lasting value. In real life, we are faced with great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations. Think great and be a great achiever,” she said.

A testament to this is Ivana Hester Cheng who graduated this year with a BS Accountancy degree after being a PSBank scholar for three straight years. The 20-year-old dean’s lister now looks forward to taking the CPA board exams in October and starting a career at PSBank.

“I want to pass the board exams first before getting my first job, hopefully at PSBank. I want to help my mother in supporting our family, sending my brother to school and taking care of my father who’s been sick for sometime now,” she said.

Ivana thanks PSBank for the scholarship grants which motivated her to be the best that she can be. “I was inspired and determined to study harder and prove to everyone that I deserved to be a PSBank scholar.”

Ivana’s mom Elizabeth, an insurance agent who earns on commission basis and the sole breadwinner of the family, also thanks PSBank for helping her daughter through college. “The assistance we received from PSBank helped a lot in our expenses. It eased my worries in paying Ivana’s tuition fees.”

For Ivana, the PSBank scholarship not only paved the way for her to earn a college degree. More so, it gave her a great head start at a brighter and better future.
