“Lean Hospitals” Selected as part of the Body of Knowledge for the Leading Lean Certification

The award-winning book 'Lean Hospitals' by Mark Graban has been selected as part of the recommended reading for the Lean Certification Program.

July 25, 2011 - PRLog -- The book ‘Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Satisfaction,’ written by Mark Graban, has been selected as part of the recommended reading list for the lean profession’s leading certification program. The Lean Certification Program is co-sponsored by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers, the Association for Manufacturing Excellence, the Shingo Prize, and the American Society for Quality.

"The Lean Certification Program's recommended reading list is not just a casual recommendation to aspiring lean practitioners.  Books on the list serve as the verified and validated source materials for items on our Lean Certification Exams.  Questions are mapped to our Body of Knowledge and must have a defensible reference in the case of an appeal,” said Tim Pettry, Member and Past Chairman of the Lean Certification Oversight and Appeals Committee.

Mark Graban commented, “It is an honor to have my book recognized and selected by the committee as a basic lean overview book for healthcare professionals who are working toward certification.”

Pettry also added, “All of the books on the Bronze level certification list are considered classics in the lean manufacturing community and provide a solid foundation for lean learning. However, the Oversight and Appeals Committee found that they were not as attractive to healthcare professionals and in some instances served as a barrier to pursuing Certification.

'Lean Hospitals' fills this large gap in the program.  The material presented in 'Lean Hospitals' covers more Body of Knowledge subjects than any other book currently on the Bronze Recommended Reading list.  Additionally, the Lean Certification Oversight  & Appeals Committee verified that the content coverage for the bronze exam is comparable to, and as thorough as, ‘Lean Production Simplified.’  This book is a valuable alternative reference source for Healthcare professionals seeking Certification and serves as a great introduction to lean in Healthcare for candidates currently practicing lean in other industries."

The first edition of ‘Lean Hospitals,’ originally published in 2008 by Productivity Press, was selected for the Lean Certification list. A second revised edition is due to be released in October 2011 with the revised title of ‘Lean Hospitals: Improving Quality, Patient Safety, and Employee Engagement.”  The book’s author, Mark Graban, is a globally recognized consultant and speaker in the field of “Lean Healthcare,” which adapts the management system and quality improvement methods of the Toyota Production System for hospital and patient care settings.

‘Lean Hospitals’ was a 2009 recipient of a Shingo Research and Professional Publication Award and is being translated into Polish, Thai, Arabic, Hungarian, Simplified & Complex Chinese, and Turkish.
