It is named after the hunter and famous environmentalist Jim Corbett who played a vital role in its establishment. It was established in the year of 1936 as Hailey National Park. This famous wildlife park of India acts a protected area for the importantly endangered royal Bengal tigers of India, the safe endurance of which is the main purpose of Project Tiger, an Indian wildlife protection proposal.
