To commemorate the historic day and continue efforts for equal treatment and quality of life for those with disabilities, the U.S. Government announced new amendments to the ADA. According to a release by the U.S. Department of Justice, the goal of these amendments is to ensure easy access to buildings and facilities to the 54 million Americans living with disabilities. The amendments target new facilities and renovations, particularly in regards to access to and within these facilities. These amendments set revised minimum standards for new businesses and facilities, and for established facilities undergoing renovations. The new standards must be met by March of 2012.These changes will affect over 80,000 local and state government facilities as well as over 7 million businesses. Anderson Lock, a Chicago locksmith and door hardware distributor, is helping clients reach compliance with the new regulations. Rose Umana is a sales representative at Anderson Lock who specializes in assisting commercial clients comply with the 2010 guidelines. “More and more schools are working towards making day to day life easier for their students with disabilities,” One of the important changes in these new revisions is highlighted in section 404.2.7 with reference to amendment 309.4. These sub-sections of the ADA Act reference the ease in which disabled persons should be able to use the operable parts of doors and gates. Examples of operable parts are locks, handles, latches, and pulls. Anderson Lock is working with their partners at Master Lock, the world’s largest manufacturer of padlocks. The engineers at Master Lock developed the 1630 Series of locks, which comply specifically with the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design. Because one of these types of locks caters directly to students with disabilities, it is an ideal lock for new school construction or expansion. New ADA Standards decree that doors and locks should be able to be opened using 5lbs or less of pressure with one hand, and not require tight grasping, pinching, or excessive twisting of the wrist. Master Lock has developed locks that have special ADA approved keys, with wide key-heads for easy turning. Ms. Umana and her team are busy supplying these locks in new or renovated schools throughout the Midwest. “These are small, simple alterations and installations,” Anderson Lock has already completed several jobs, for schools seeking to make these updates before the March 2012 deadline.
