July 6, 2011 - PRLog -- When it comes to drinking a glass of water straight from the tap, do you know which city in the United States has the best tasting water? Here’s a hint – it’s where FreshWaterSystems.com is headquartered!
On June 14th 2011, the American Water Works Association awwa.org held a water taste test and announced the winner of America’s best tasting tap water. After the judging panel rated 24 different regional drinking water systems on their flavor characteristics, they determined the winning city to be Greenville, South Carolina. Why does Greenville have some of the best tasting tap water, you may ask? Greenville Water System officials say it is because of its two 26,000 acre protected watersheds. These watersheds are located within the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountain Range – and hunting, boating, and/or fishing are strictly prohibited in the area, limiting its exposure to man-made pollutants. http://www.youtube.com/ As many people outside the Greenville, South Carolina area are aware, the first thing we notice about a city’s tap water is its taste. Taste can originate from many contaminants, most of which are regulated by the EPA’s National Secondary Drinking Water Standards. The secondary standards are non-enforceable guidelines for regulating aesthetic water quality problems such as unpleasant taste or odor. The most common and noticeable taste is Chlorine. City water supplies use chlorine as a disinfectant to control the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. In the residential water treatment industry, water filters that help to correct chlorine taste and odor are referred to as CTO filters (Chlorine Taste & Odor). There are several simple filtration devices that are easy to use, inexpensive, and can dramatically improve the taste of tap water while reducing many other harmful water contaminants: 1. Refrigerator Filters : One of the most common home water filter systems is built right into the refrigerator. And frequently replacing the refrigerator water filter not only helps to remove chlorine and improve taste water, but also reduce other water contaminants such as Lead, Mercury, and cysts among others (see your filter’s specifications for details). As a general rule, refrigerator water filters should be replaced every 6 months, and are simple to replace - most just slide right into place. 2. Water Pitcher Filters : Filtered water pitchers are an easy and economical way to provide your family with great tasting drinking water. Water filter pitchers typically allow for filling directly from the tap and storing the unused portion inside the refrigerator to keep the water chilled. Pitcher filters work by using gravity to force water through an activated carbon filter. The water is first poured into the upper portion of the pitcher. Then it trickles through the filter into the lower portion of the pitcher where it is stored. The activated carbon filter reduces chlorine, bad taste, odors, and other contaminants. Many people use this type of water filtering device for drinking and cooking water. 3. Faucet Mount Filters: Do you prefer to just turn on the kitchen faucet for a glass of water? Then a faucet mount water filter would be a simple solution for your cooking and drinking water needs. Faucet mount filter systems are easy to install - most require no tools, and can be installed in just minutes. These water filters also dramatically reduce the chlorine, bad taste, odor, and sediment in the water. As an extra layer of protection, many faucet filters, such as the Culligan FM-15, also reduce cryptosporidium, Giardia Cysts, and Lead. For maximum contaminant removal, other options such as Ultrafiltration, Reverse Osmosis or Distillation can be used to increase the water quality beyond just aesthetic concerns. These systems are becoming increasingly popular and inexpensive. It’s important to remember that the taste of water actually has little to do with its overall quality. Taste is highly subjective after all. Some water contaminants that effect taste such as iron (sweet taste) or chlorides (salty taste) actually pose no health threat. While other contaminants, like fluoride and arsenic, are known to be tasteless carcinogens. Harmful contaminants such as these are regulated by the EPA’s Primary Drinking Water Standard (for health). Every municipal water supply is required to meet certain Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) for regulated contaminants, but testing only reveals a problem after it is discovered and warnings are only issued if the problem is prolonged. With recent news of hexavalent chromium, fuel byproducts, and pharmaceuticals being found in city tap water, it seems virtually no water source is free from the threat of pollution.
