| Stop Smoking Helpline jammed due to new FDA Labels to be releasedFuture cigarette packaging in the USA prompts thousands to call help line
By: Mark Barrus It's been 25 years since the last change in tobacco warning labels, and the current labels released by the FDA have made quite a stir among smokers, and parents of smokers alike. The National Stop Smoking Help Line at Healthy Life Centers, 888-865-1870, has had twice the normal number of calls since the warning labels were released to news agencies and the public. A normal week would be 1500 calls, but the number has increased to 3000 since the labels have been shown to the public. Healthy Life Centers estimates that that number will increase to 4500 calls per week once the cigarette packs, with new warning labels, hit the store shelves in the coming months. Some smokers say that they will just "overlook" the packaging and continue to smoke normally. Others say that the labels will help to stop young teenagers from starting to smoke in the first place. Either way, "it can't hurt", says Mark Barrus, Director of Healthy Life Centers. "If they pick up the phone, call in, and speak with one of our counselors, there's a darn good chance that we can get them to see the benefit of becoming a non-smoker again".
