Click and save the environment

An eco-friendly search engine allows users to not only search the web but also help the environment

June 15, 2011 - PRLog -- Ecosia, a green search engine has a refreshing approach to search advertising as it diverts a substantial amount of money raised to protecting the rainforest in northern Brazil.

The way it works is very simple. Using Ecosia as your search engine, you type in your normal search as you would on Google or Bing. If you come across a sponsored link and click on it, the sponsoring company pays Bing or Yahoo for the click and they in turn give the bigger fraction of that money to Ecosia. From this income, 80% is donated to support WWF in projects that protect the environment.

So far, the green search engine has just over €250,000 in funds, and is committed to supporting programs to help the rainforest such as the Tumucumaque project.
The region in northern Brazil is particularly important as it is home to large populations of at least eight endangered species, including the jaguar. It also holds a vast quantity of unpolluted water in the Neotropics which contains roughly 20% of all the Earth’s water.
Aside from being a significant contributor to regulating the climate through carbon storage and heat absorption, it contains a percentage of rainforests that are still pristine and is generally one of the last remaining tropical regions that has not been massively altered by humans.

Based in Berlin, Ecosia is doing roughly 700,000 searches a day and also runs on green energy, offsetting emissions with PURE and the Gold Standard.
