By: A & R Select Malakai is a hip-hop artist who was born and raised in Tuscon, Arizona. He is of Mexican and Spanish descent and is the founder of his movement Substance Over Hype. Malakai found hip-hop and street movements partially helped him to overcome a previously negative youth. His mission now is to create a fusion of genres, styles, movements and cultures; and he’s calling it Fresh. He produces his own beats along and adds lyrical skills that range from poetic to artful story telling. He brings various musical styles into the mix, sprinkling Latin culture into his American based creations. You can hear this in songs such as “Fresh”, “Ghetto Blaster” and “Concrete Rose”. Malakai began his journey in music as a freestyle-battle MC. He left Tucson on the heels of winning what we would be the defining battle of his hip-hop career where he beat a long-time rival MC in front of an audience of 5,000 people. After that win, he moved to Los Angeles in 2005. Once in L.A. he began learning about music production and recording from a producer named Igloo. He then produced, wrote, and released 2 CD’s and 2 singles between 2007 and 2010 (under the help of his mentor & collaboration with other great artists). His albums, “Verstalyle Stile” and “Rebels of the Audio Revival” were well received. The positive response to his music, live performances, and a particularly successful show with artist Bruno Mars further encouraged the artist. In 2010, he decided to build and fully execute both his visions: MALAKAI Music & Substance Over Hype -for an official release in 2011. “Substance Over Hype” is the name of his upcoming CD with the single “Fresh” leading the way. This single represents the signature sound that Malakai also calls “Fresh”, thus the name of the single. He calls it a feel good summer jam –type song. In fact, it is exactly that. It is an R & B, hot, hip, cool golden nugget that brings this International sound to audiences worldwide. Vocally, he hits the mark. The beat is rockin’ and it just makes you want to move your body. It was put together with such style and its delivery is pure delight. This single is representative of Malakai but not necessarily of this upcoming CD.
