By: Green Pieces Cartoon Studio Press June 6, 2011 - PRLog -- International awarding-winning cartoonist Drew Aquilina has won the 2011 New York Book Festival Comics Runner Up prize. Aquilina and all winners of the annual competition celebrating books deserving recognition from the world’s publishing capital will be honored at the Algonquin Hotel, New York's center of literary and theatrical life, in Manhattan on June 10, 2011.
Aquilina wrote and illustrated Green Pieces: Green From the Pond Up, naturally the world’s greenest, most environmentally friendly humor. This extraordinary 350+ cartoon strip collection humorously profiles nature and provides educators and parents with an effective, funny and positive environmental platform that answers the question “who knew being green could be so hilarious?!” Being one of few authors who has ever simultaneously won multiple literary competitions, Aquilina and Green Pieces also won the Comics/Graphic Novel of the Year at the 2011 Green Book Festival, honoring books that contribute to greater understanding, respect for and positive action on the changing worldwide environment. Further, Aquilina’s work was named Wild card Book of the Year at the 2011 Paris, France Book Festival, the annual competition honoring international publishing’s finest. Green Pieces also received Honorable Mention at the 2011 San Francisco Book Festival, the event celebrating the best books of the Spring season. Debuting at the 38th Annual International Cartoon Festival in Angouleme, France in January 2011, Green Pieces follows the delightful antics of four main characters who introduce the reader to the life and times around a typical wetland, in this case a pond. Led by the claustrophobic turtle protagonist named Iggman, the action picks up once humans leave the scene. “Iggy’ Brian Walker, Hi and Lois, wrote the Foreword for Aquilina’s inaugural cartoon compilation. Mr. Walker, world-renowned cartoonist and cartoon historian states Aquilina’s “technique is now fully developed. His writing is well-paced and conveys a positive, environmental message. The backgrounds depict a realistic locale and the scenery documents the changing seasons. The main cast (is) charming and believable. The humor is warm and genuine.” Born and raised in southwestern Connecticut, Aquilina’s first comic strip originated as Iggman on Campus in 1987. It was published for three semesters in The Collegian, UMass Amherst. Once converted to Green pieces©, the strip was copyrighted and ran in Western Connecticut’ Green Pieces: Green From the Pond Up, [ISBN: 9780983344438, 11” x 8.5”, 197 pages Color Second Edition] a book from Green Pieces Cartoon Studio, retails for $19.99 US and is distributed through Midpoint Trade Books and Premium Book Company.
